This home study course will provide massage therapists with a clear and practical understanding of the scope of practice as defined by state licensing boards and statutes. The course explains the legal boundaries of massage therapy, how scope of practice is determined and enforced, and how to interpret scope language within state laws and regulations. Bodyworkers will also learn how to identify red flags, recognize when referral is necessary, and understand scope boundaries in various practice settings.

  • Define scope of practice and explain its purpose in massage therapy licensure and regulation.
  • Identify who determines scope of practice, including state statutes, licensing boards, and administrative rules.
  • Differentiate between massage therapy services and medical treatment or diagnosis.
  • Interpret state scope language and recognize common scope limitations and violations.
  • Identify assessment activities that are within scope and differentiate them from diagnostic practices.
  • Recognize red flags and contraindications that require referral to a healthcare provider.
  • Explain how scope of practice varies in different settings such as spa, clinical, and multi-disciplinary environments.
